ALNICO MAGNETS

Alnico magnets have high residual induction and excellent temperature stability. High energy Alnico materials are made of alloying aluminum, nickel, cobalt, and iron. Alnico magnets are produced by sintering or a casting process. The Cast magnets can achieve “as cast” complex shapes and configurations which is not possible with the other magnet materials. Sintered Alnico magnets produces lower magnetic properties but provide higher mechanical characteristics than cast Alnicos.

The cast Alnico 5 is the magnet of choice and is most commonly used. Alnico magnets are brittle and hard therefore drilling and machining “cannot” be achieved by conventional methods. Cored undersized holes are cast then machined to finished tighter tolerances.

Because of its low coercive force Alnico can easily be demagnetized. Alnico 8 provides higher coercivity properties which may be optimal contingent on the application.

Manufacturing


Again, Alnico magnets are produced through a sintering or by a casting process.

The Cast magnet is formulated by pouring molted metal alloy into a mold cavity and processed through several cycles of heat-treat. The surface finish results in a dark gray outer appearance with a rough surface texture. Machined magnet surface finishes will be a typical shiny appearance like steel.

The Sintered magnet are produced by compressing fine Alnico powder in a press then sintering the now compact powder into a solid magnet.

Assemblies


Most magnetic assemblies are fabricated by bonding the magnets with adhesives. They also can be fastened mechanically. Either process or combined will reasonably withstand the environmental impacts. Press fits are not recommended due to the brittle conditions of Alnico magnets.
